Social Media Gurus – I Hate Them!
Is it me or does everyone suddenly seem to be a social media guru or worse an expert? The words I hear from these gurus are things like “Grab your audience attention”, “know your audience” and my personal favourite “create great content.”
Then add in some great acronyms like ROI or SOE, and I think I may just have to revisit my breakfast.
Unfortunately, most social media companies are in it for the quick fix, that mythical unicorn viral post or video so they can show just how many people have liked and shared it. We see it on Twitter all the time, screenshots of analytics, the big question for me though is……then what? What happens once that quick hit has finished, what happens when everyone goes to the next big thing? Will, anybody care about your business in six months, a year, two years?
So just how do you continue on social media and what are these Gurus missing? How do you keep your presence on social media all the time, year after year?
The answer is actually straightforward. Add value to others lives, tell them about you and what you and your company are doing and stop trying to make every post sell something.
It’s called ‘Social Media’ for an excellent reason, it’s meant to be just that, social! It’s not called ‘Advertising Media’ or ‘Look at ME media’.
Most things on Social Media have changed dramatically in the last 10 years, but the 80/20 rule is still one worth working towards. 80% of your posts should add value to people, and only 20% should advertise.
The team at iJoe are most certainly not experts or gurus, but we do have a wealth of experience in the digital world, and we believe that every day is a learning day.
We will leave the quick fix to others, we are here for the long game!
