4 Small Business Fables about Social Media.
We hear it time and time again, all the reasons why a small business can’t use social media. Well we are here to turn those reasons on their head. What we should be saying is why Small Businesses can’t afford NOT to be on Social Media.
#1 SOCIAL MEDIA IS ONLY FOR BIG BUSINESS
Yes this may have been true about 10 years ago, but quite simply if you have a smartphone in your pocket then you have the power to use all of the major social media platforms with the touch of a button. This actually puts you at an amazing advantage over the ‘Big Boys’. While they have to have meetings, make sure they are observing corporate policy and generally spend lots of time and money before they even send a tweet or post, you guys can click and take pictures at a moments notice, showing exactly who you are, what you do and most important tell the whole world your amazing story.
#2 IT WILL COST LOTS OF MONEY
No it won’t. You don’t need to buy Twitter or Facebook, there is no monthly subscription to Instagram or Pinterest. What this isn’t though is advertising. The key to Social Media is that very important first word ‘Social’. Just like in real life the ability to make friends, colleagues and connections is a really important part of telling your story. The more people that connect with you the wider that story gets to be heard and then the more likely that people will come to you for your services or products. Unlike advertising via Paper, Flyer, Radio or other traditional ways Social Media allows you to tell your story every day to the entire planet, and best of all for FREE.
#3 I NEED TO BE ON TWITTER, FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, SNAPCHAT, EVERYTHING!
No you don’t need to be on everything. Honestly you don’t. It is far better to make a great job of one or two platforms rather than trying to be on all of them. In fact one of the first things you need to work out is where the people you want to talk to are. If you want to talk to professionals then maybe LinkedIn is the place to be, children and the younger generation then Instagram may be the perfect place. Find your audience, pick the social media platform of choice and then concentrate on that one to start with.
#4 I JUST DON’T HAVE TIME
Oh you don’t have time! You don’t have time to grow your business, you don’t have time to give amazing customer service, you don’t have time to make extra money, you don’t have time to tell people about your business or service for absolutely FREE! Yes FREE. Think about it most social media is free to use, you don’t pay for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and others. With as little as 15 minutes a day you could start to let everyone else know just how awesome your business is. Yep 15 minutes a day can open up an amazing world for your business.
